A new variant of the coronavirus has aroused the interest of the World Health Organization (WHO). This is the strain known as EG.5 or 'eris', which is now circulating in countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom. The most recent variation of the virus descended from Omicron has been reported in 17% of cases of infection registered in the North American country. Cases have also been reported in China, Japan, Canada, South Korea and other territories around the globe.

In a risk assessment, the WHO said that "taken together, the avail Phone Number List able evidence does not suggest that EG.5 poses additional risks to public health relative to the other Omicron descendant lineages currently circulating."

Covid infections are increasing in the US, should we worry?
Records reveal that coronavirus cases in the US are slowly increasing for the fourth consecutive summer. Is this cause for alarm or just a seasonal trend?
However, Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical manager on covid-19, stated that the EG.5 variation had greater transmissibility, so it is necessary to maintain constant monitoring in this regard.

On the other hand, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, stated that “there remains a risk of the emergence of a more dangerous variant that could cause a sudden increase in cases and deaths.”

The WHO has repeatedly emphasized that Covid-19 is still a new disease about which there are many things to learn, even more so when new strains are in sight . The organization announced the formation of a new advisory committee for countries to optimize their response mechanisms to the virus in the long term with a focus on prevention against possible new pandemics .

The coronavirus persists
In the most recent statements, the WHO regretted the inattention of many countries regarding the spread of the virus. In July, only 25% of the world's countries reported deaths related to covid-19. Just 11% of nations reported hospitalizations and intensive care admissions due to the coronavirus, according to the international health body.

“It does not mean that the rest of the countries have stopped having deaths and hospitalizations, but rather that they do not report them. (...) There is no doubt that the risk of death or serious cases is now much lower than a year ago, due to the increasing immunization of the population thanks to vaccines and infections, but despite the improvement, the WHO “The public health risk of Covid-19 continues to be considered high,” Tedros said.

The WHO decreed the end of the international emergency due to covid-19 on May 5. The global emergency decree that was terminated is a tool that the WHO uses to streamline response mechanisms in the event of an unusual and unexpected disease or health threat with a serious impact on public health internationally with the potential to affect the economy. That risk persists.

In Mexico, for example, the Covid-19 Tracking and Monitoring System reported just over 7.6 million positive cases until June 25. The figure represents an increase of more than 8 thousand registrations compared to what was considered at the beginning of the month. The platform's data shows an upward trend during the four weeks of said month.
